Multiple Bank Accounts in a UPI App: IDs, Defaults and Payment Checks

Understand how linked bank accounts, UPI IDs and receiving defaults differ, then check the account used for each payment before you approve.

Adding a second bank account to a UPI app can help separate household spending from another budget. It does not create a new bank balance, guarantee a higher payment limit or mean every UPI ID routes to the same account. Before adding an account, decide what you want to change: the account you pay from, the account that receives money, or the address people use to pay you.

Separate the account, address and app

The bank account holds the funds. A UPI ID is a payment address associated with a supported account setup. The app provides the interface for managing those addresses and making payments. These are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Google Pay documents up to four UPI IDs per linked bank account. Its payment-service-provider explanation also makes clear that the bank name in an ID’s handle need not be the bank holding your money. Multiple handles do not mean you own multiple bank accounts.

Add only an account you can verify

Use the bank-account section of your genuine payment app. In Google Pay’s setup instructions, the bank must support the service, the app and bank registration numbers must match, and the phone must be able to send the required verification SMS. An existing UPI PIN can be used; adding an account does not always require inventing another PIN.

  1. Check the bank name and masked account number before linking.
  2. Select the SIM registered with that bank if the phone has multiple SIMs.
  3. Complete verification privately in the official app.
  4. Give the account a recognisable label where the app supports it.
  5. Review the displayed IDs and receiving settings after setup.

Do not link an unfamiliar account simply because it appears in a discovery result. If the account details look wrong, stop and contact the bank through its official channel.

Check sending and receiving separately

For an outgoing purchase, inspect the funding account on the payment screen before authorisation. For incoming payments, check the address you shared and how that address is configured. Google Pay describes its primary account as the account used to receive payments through Google Pay. Another app may expose different controls.

A practical check after changing a receiving default is to confirm the selected account in the app and, if needed, arrange a small intended payment with someone you know. Match the reference to the bank credit. Do not assume a person using an older saved ID will automatically follow every new preference you set.

A simple monthly reconciliation routine

RecordWhat to compare
Outgoing purchaseMerchant, amount, reference and the debited account
Incoming transferShared UPI ID, reference and credited account
RefundOriginal payment and the provider’s refund destination
Recurring mandateMerchant, linked account, next collection and status

For example, if groceries use account A and rent uses account B, check the selected account each time rather than relying on whichever account the app last displayed. Review both statements; one app’s activity screen is not necessarily a complete record of transactions made elsewhere.

Do not use account switching as an automatic retry

If a payment is pending or money was debited, check its status before paying again from another account. Otherwise you can pay twice. A second account also does not automatically double an applicable transaction or daily allowance. Read the bank and payment-category limit guide for the controls that may apply.

Before removing an account or changing phones

Review active AutoPay mandates, refunds in progress and any separately funded Lite balance. Removing an account from an app is not the same as closing the bank account or cancelling every subscription. PhonePe’s AutoPay terms, for example, restrict unlinking an account used by active mandates. Follow the specific provider’s process and verify the final status.

Scanning a QR does not by itself expose the default account to an automatic debit. Still read the payee, amount and payment action before approving. Keep bank credentials private regardless of how many accounts are linked.
