Why Your 5G Is Slower Than 4G, and How to Fix It

Your phone says 5G and your download is slower than 4G. Both can be true. The two bands wearing the same badge, standalone vs non-standalone, and the setting that actually helps.

Your phone says 5G. Your download is slower than it was on 4G. Both of those things can be true at once, and the reason is physics rather than a fault.

Here is what is actually happening on Indian networks, and the settings that help.

Two Bands Wearing the Same Badge

Indian 5G runs mainly on two very different frequencies, and your status bar shows the same “5G” for both.

n78, around 3.5 GHz. This is the fast one — wide bandwidth, the speeds shown in advertising. It also barely penetrates walls. Move one room away from a window and you may lose it.

n28, 700 MHz. This travels far and penetrates buildings well, which is why it provides indoor coverage. But it is a narrow slice of spectrum, and a phone parked on n28 can easily be slower than a good 4G connection using carrier aggregation across several bands.

So the most common version of this complaint is: indoors, your phone has dropped to n28, and 4G with aggregation was genuinely faster. The badge says 5G; the bandwidth says otherwise.

Standalone vs Non-Standalone

The second structural reason is architecture, and India’s two big operators took different routes.

Jio built standalone (SA) 5G — a full 5G core with no dependence on 4G, using 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz together.

Airtel launched non-standalone (NSA), anchoring 5G to its existing 4G core. On NSA, the control plane and much of the uplink ride the 4G carrier, so a congested or weak LTE anchor caps the entire session no matter how good the 5G signal looks. Airtel has said its network is fully SA-ready as of May 2026, with fixed wireless access already running standalone and handset users being migrated in phases, but there is no published date for completion.

This is why the same phone in the same building can behave differently on two operators.

Congestion Is Now the Dominant Factor

The uncomfortable data point: Indian 5G speeds have been falling, not rising. Independent measurement through 2025 showed both major operators’ average 5G download speeds declining from their late-2024 peaks — by roughly 20 to 30 Mbps each — with congestion and peak-hour load the cited cause.

Unlimited 5G data on affordable tariffs brought enormous traffic onto a fixed amount of spectrum. Availability improved; per-user throughput did not. TRAI’s current consultation includes proposals to cap how many cells may run above 80% resource utilisation, which is a regulator acknowledging exactly this problem.

The Other Reasons

Cell-edge churn. Sitting between an n78 and an n28 cell, your phone hands over repeatedly. Each handover costs throughput, and constant switching is worse than committing to the weaker band.

Your device. Chipsets differ in which 5G bands they support and whether they handle standalone mode. Two phones side by side on the same network genuinely can perform differently.

Battery and thermal limits. A hot or low phone throttles its radio.

What Actually Helps

Switch to 4G indoors when 5G is worse. The most effective fix and the least intuitive. In Settings, under mobile network, set Preferred Network Type to LTE or 4G. If you get better throughput on 4G in your home or office, keep it there — you can switch back outdoors. This also improves battery life noticeably.

Toggle airplane mode. Forces the phone to reselect a cell. Genuinely useful when you have been sitting on a poor connection after moving location.

Turn off “5G Auto” or “Smart Data” modes that keep 5G attached at the cell edge, which is exactly where it performs worst.

Move towards a window if you want n78 indoors. It sounds trivial and it is often the whole difference.

Test properly before concluding anything. Run a speed test at different times of day — if your speeds are fine at 11am and poor at 9pm, that is congestion, not your handset. The method in our guide to testing connection speed properly applies to mobile too.

What Will Not Help

Network booster apps do nothing; they cannot influence radio behaviour. Signal booster stickers and antenna patches are not real. The Realistic Summary

5G in India delivers well outdoors and near n78 coverage, and is often unremarkable indoors on 700 MHz. Availability is high; sustained peak speed is not. The most useful thing you can do is stop treating the 5G badge as a promise, test in the places you actually use your phone, and set your preferred network accordingly.

Check Which Band You Are Actually On

Everything above is easier to act on once you can see whether your phone is sitting on n78 or n28, rather than guessing from the badge.

On most Android phones, dialling *#*#4636#*#* opens a testing menu with phone information, including the band in use. Several free network-info apps show the same thing more readably, listing the band, signal strength in dBm, and whether the connection is standalone or non-standalone.

On an iPhone, Field Test Mode is reached by dialling *3001#12345#*, though the display is considerably less friendly.

Spend five minutes checking the places you actually use your phone — your desk, your sofa, your bed. If n28 is what you get at home and your speed tests there are poor, that is your answer, and switching that location to 4G is a rational choice rather than a downgrade.

A Note on Signal Bars

Bars measure signal strength, not signal quality or available capacity. Five bars on a heavily congested cell will be slower than two bars on an empty one, which is why a full-signal phone in a crowded market can barely load a page.

If you want a real number, the dBm reading in the same testing menu is more informative: roughly -50 to -80 dBm is strong, -80 to -100 dBm is workable, and below about -110 dBm is where things start failing. Pair that with a speed test and you have a genuine picture rather than an impression.
