Aadhaar Address Update: Choose the Route, Check Documents and Track the Request

Compare Aadhaar address-update routes, check the ₹75 fee and document requirements, and avoid confusing an address change with free document refresh.

Before changing an Aadhaar address, decide whether you will use a proof-of-address document in your own name or an eligible Head of Family route. Then check access to the authentication method required by that service. A clear document and an accurate preview matter more than rushing through the payment screen.

Address change and document refresh are different

UIDAI currently lists ₹75 for an address update on its My Aadhaar service page. Separately, its charges schedule lists online PoI/PoA document update through myAadhaar as free until 14 June 2027. That refresh supports the details already recorded; it should not be confused with changing the address itself. Check the actual service and fee before paying.

Choose a route you can complete

  • myAadhaar portal: start from the official portal and follow its address-update and authentication requirements.
  • Aadhaar app: UIDAI’s current app supports address updates using documents or a family member’s Aadhaar, with authentication and payment steps.
  • Authorised centre: use an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised enrolment/update centre if your situation cannot be completed online.

Do not confuse the newer Aadhaar app with every older mAadhaar instruction. UIDAI’s app FAQ says a mobile-number update can be completed in the app under specified OTP and face-authentication conditions. If you have no access to the old registered number, or are registering a number for the first time, a centre visit is required. The blanket claim that all mobile-number changes must be done in person is therefore outdated.

Check the document’s purpose, not just its name

Open the current accepted documents list from UIDAI’s website. Make sure the document is accepted for proof of address for your update category. A document accepted as proof of date of birth or family relationship is not automatically accepted for address. Check its validity period, required details and any notes.

Prepare a readable image of the required original document, with the relevant name and address visible. Do not assume that a relative’s utility bill can be uploaded as your own proof. Do not alter a document to make it fit the form.

If you use a family member’s address

The HoF route requires the eligible family member’s participation. Check the relationship and consent requirements in the route you use, and confirm that their Aadhaar carries the correct address. UIDAI’s HoF explanation describes relationship evidence and a prescribed self-declaration alternative. Follow current instructions rather than treating an ordinary signed note as universally sufficient. The newer app has its own family-request approval flow.

Before and after submission

  1. Check the document type and the address you intend to adopt.
  2. Enter the address accurately and review both English and the local-language preview where provided. Correct material mismatches before submitting.
  3. Complete only the authentication requested by the official service and check the fee.
  4. Save the acknowledgement and its SRN, URN or other request identifier. Use the identifier shown for your specific route.
  5. Track the request rather than assuming payment means approval. If rejected, read the reason before paying for another attempt.

Allow for verification

Do not plan around a guaranteed few-working-day completion. UIDAI’s general update guidance allows up to 90 days, while its current app guidance provides timing for the services in that app. Use the estimate for your selected route. For an overdue or unclear case, contact UIDAI through its official support channel or 1947 with the request reference.

Once approved, check the updated record. A change in Aadhaar does not establish that every bank, tax or service account has automatically updated its separate address record.

Reviewed on 27 October 2026. Fees and service availability should be checked again at submission; approval is subject to UIDAI verification.
