Changing the address on your Aadhaar is one of the few pieces of Indian government paperwork you can genuinely finish from your sofa — provided your registered mobile number works and you have the right document, in the right name, from the right date range.
Get one of those three wrong and the request is rejected, the fee is not refunded, and you start again. So the preparation matters more than the process.
Before You Start: Two Things That Decide Everything
Your registered mobile number must be working. The entire update runs on an OTP. If your Aadhaar has an old number attached, no online update of any kind is possible and you will need to fix that first, in person.
Your proof of address must be in your own name. Under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Amendment Regulations, 2025, effective 1 November 2025, documents must be current and in the applicant’s own name. A bill in your father’s or landlord’s name is not usable directly — there is a separate route for that, covered below.
What It Costs, and the Free Thing People Confuse It With
An online address change is a demographic update and is reported at ₹75 following UIDAI’s revision of service charges. The same service at a Seva Kendra costs the same.
Here is where nearly everyone gets confused. UIDAI is also running a free document update facility on the myAadhaar portal, currently extended to 14 June 2027. That free service is for re-uploading your proof of identity and proof of address to refresh records that may be a decade old. It is not a free address change. If you are changing what your address actually says, you are paying ₹75.
Confirm the current fee on the portal before paying, since these rates were revised in late 2025.
The Documents UIDAI Accepts as Proof of Address
The list is longer than most people realise, which usually means you already have something valid.
- Utility bills — electricity, water, gas, landline, postpaid mobile or broadband — not older than three months
- Property tax receipt, not older than one year
- Registered sale deed, gift deed, lease or rent agreement
- Government or PSU allotment letter, not older than one year
- Life or medical insurance policy
- Bank or post office passbook carrying your photograph
- Bank, credit card or post office statement, not older than three months
- Birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969
- Certificate from a gazetted officer or other authorised official
- Head of Family self-declaration, for a family member’s address
The three-month and one-year windows are strict. A four-month-old electricity bill will be rejected, and this single detail causes more failures than anything else.
If the Bill Is Not in Your Name
Students, newly married women, and anyone living with family or in rented accommodation usually hit this. The answer is the Head of Family (HoF) route.
You select HoF-based update, enter the Aadhaar number of the family member whose address you want to adopt, and upload a document proving your relationship — a ration card, a marriage certificate, a passport, or a birth certificate showing the link. The HoF then receives an OTP on their registered number and must approve the request.
Two conditions matter: the HoF must be 18 or older, and their own Aadhaar address must already be correct. If they do not approve within the window, the request lapses.
The Process, Step by Step
- Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP.
- Choose the address update service.
- Enter the new address exactly as it appears on your document — same spelling, same abbreviations, same PIN code. Do not tidy it up.
- Upload a clear scan or photograph of the full document. All four corners visible, text readable, under the size limit, in an accepted format.
- Pay the fee.
- Save the URN (Update Request Number) shown on the acknowledgement.
Track the request with the URN on the same portal. Processing usually takes a few working days, though it can run longer during busy periods. When it completes, download the fresh Aadhaar PDF — the password is the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your birth year.
Why Address Updates Get Rejected
The document is out of date. Bills older than three months, allotment letters older than a year.
The document is not in your name and you did not use the HoF route.
The address you typed does not match the document. If the bill says “Flat 4B” do not write “Flat 4-B”. Reviewers compare the two literally.
The scan is poor. Cropped edges, glare, a shadow across the address block, or a photograph taken at an angle.
The HoF never approved. Tell them the OTP is coming, because an unexpected Aadhaar OTP is exactly what people have been trained to ignore.
You submitted a self-attested photocopy image. Upload a clean scan of the original document, not a photocopy with handwriting across it.
After the Update
Your Aadhaar address feeds a surprising number of other systems. Once the change is live, check that your bank, your PAN records, your gas connection and your voter roll entry reflect the new address too — several of these pull from Aadhaar at KYC time and will throw mismatches later if left inconsistent.
