If a UPI payment appears to have failed but your account was debited, check the bank entry and transaction status before paying again. A second attempt may become a second payment. Save the reference and raise the issue through the payment app or bank’s official support; you do not have to wait silently for an arbitrary number of days before reporting it.
Separate the possible situations
| What you can verify | What it means for the next step |
|---|---|
| No debit in your bank account | Check the final status before deciding whether to retry |
| Debit and matching reversal | Match the amount and reference, then confirm that no duplicate payment succeeded |
| Debit but recipient has no credit or merchant confirmation | Record the failure type and contact official support |
| Successful payment to an unintended recipient | Report a mistaken transfer promptly; do not classify it as a technical failure |
| Payment connected with a scam or an unrecognised debit | Report it as suspected fraud and secure affected access immediately |
Do not diagnose the bank’s internal system from a spinning screen. The app may not yet show the final result, and the recipient should check their own account or merchant record rather than rely on your screenshot.
The two RBI deadlines are different
For qualifying domestic UPI failures, the RBI framework specifies T+1 for a debit without beneficiary credit if credit cannot be completed, and T+5 for a debit without merchant confirmation. T is the transaction’s calendar date. Compensation is ₹100 per day beyond the applicable deadline, to be credited automatically.
The distinction is why a shop-payment example should not automatically be given the transfer deadline. Ask the bank which incident category it has recorded. These rules do not turn every goods-return refund, wrong-recipient payment or fraud claim into the same technical-failure case.
Create a complaint that can be traced
- Open the original transaction and save its reference, amount, date and displayed status.
- Check the debit and any reversal in the bank statement.
- Use the transaction’s help or dispute option, or the bank’s official channel. Describe the observed facts.
- Keep the complaint acknowledgement and promised next step.
- When following up, quote the same reference and ask about both the principal amount and any applicable delay compensation.
An app support ticket is not automatically proof that a formal chargeback has been filed. Ask what process was started and keep its reference. Do not share a PIN or OTP to “release” a reversal.
A worked record for a shop payment
Suppose a ₹750 purchase shows a debit but the merchant cannot confirm payment. Record the original transaction as disputed, not as a completed refund. If you agree with the merchant to use another payment method, keep the second receipt and ask how a duplicate credit will be reconciled. Later, compare both records with the bank statement before closing the complaint.
This example is a recordkeeping method, not a prediction of how quickly that particular bank will resolve the case. The useful outcome is a traceable explanation of every debit and credit.
Escalate through the appropriate channel
Use the bank’s grievance process when ordinary support does not resolve the issue. NPCI’s complaint facility explains that it routes complaints to member institutions; it is not a substitute for retaining your bank complaint evidence.
If you remain dissatisfied, check the current admissibility and waiting-period requirements in the RBI Ombudsman FAQ and use RBI CMS where eligible. The applicable payment-network timeframe can matter. Do not assume that every unresolved transaction becomes eligible on the same date.
When a different process is needed
For a mistaken transfer, notify the bank immediately and give the actual recipient and transaction details. Do not accuse someone of fraud merely because you entered the wrong address. For suspected fraud, contact the bank and report promptly through 1930 and the cybercrime portal. Neither situation should be described as a guaranteed automatic reversal.
Before your next payment, confirm the recipient, amount and funding source. If a service is unavailable, choose an alternative only after checking the original attempt. See the UPI payment checklist for the wider process.
