WhatsApp chats do not move between Android and iPhone through a normal backup. Your Google Drive backup cannot be read by an iPhone, and iCloud cannot be read by Android. The two are separate worlds, and the only official bridge has one condition that catches almost everybody.
The iPhone must be brand new or factory reset. The transfer happens during the iPhone’s initial setup. If you have already set up the iPhone and used it for a week, the only way to do this officially is to erase it and start again.
Read that before you do anything else. It is the single reason most people fail at this.
What You Need
- An iPhone that is new, or fully erased and sitting at the setup screen
- The Move to iOS app installed on the Android phone
- Reasonably recent versions of WhatsApp on both devices
- The same phone number on both — this is not a way to move chats to a different number
- A cable to connect the two phones, or both on the same Wi-Fi network
- Both phones plugged into power
The Process
- Back up on Android first as insurance. WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up. This backup will not be readable on the iPhone, but it protects you if something goes wrong mid-transfer.
- Install Move to iOS on the Android phone from the Play Store.
- Start the iPhone. Work through setup until you reach Apps & Data, then choose Move Data from Android.
- The iPhone displays a code. Enter it in Move to iOS on the Android phone.
- On the selection screen, tick WhatsApp along with anything else you want moved.
- On Android, WhatsApp will prompt you to start the export. Confirm, and WhatsApp signs out on that device.
- Wait. A large media library can take a considerable time. Do not touch either phone, do not let either screen lock, and keep both charging.
- When the iPhone finishes setup, install WhatsApp from the App Store, open it, and verify the same phone number.
- Tap Start when prompted to import the transferred data, and let it finish.
What Moves and What Does Not
Moves: your chat history, photos, videos and voice notes, your profile photo, your account information, and your settings.
Does not move: your call history, and your display name — you set that again on the iPhone.
Worth knowing: once the transfer completes, the chats live in iCloud’s world. Going back to Android later means doing the reverse process, which has its own equivalent requirement.
When It Goes Wrong
You already set up the iPhone. The only official route is Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings, then start over. Back up anything already on the iPhone first.
The transfer stalls. Usually a screen locking, a phone dropping off Wi-Fi, or one device running low on battery. Set both screens to never sleep, use a cable rather than Wi-Fi if you can, and keep both plugged in.
Not enough space on the iPhone. A large WhatsApp library needs room. Check the iPhone’s capacity against the size of your WhatsApp storage on Android — the figure is in WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage. If it is enormous, this is a good moment to delete the forwarded videos you will never watch, which our guide to clearing phone storage covers.
Different phone numbers. Not supported. Change the number on WhatsApp before transferring, or accept starting fresh.
About Third-Party Transfer Tools
A category of paid desktop software promises to move WhatsApp between platforms without erasing the iPhone. Some works. Be aware of what you are agreeing to: your entire chat history passes through third-party software, and you are trusting an unknown company with years of private conversation, plus whatever the tool requires to access your device.
If your chats matter enough to pay for, they probably matter enough not to hand to an unvetted vendor. The official route is free and erasing a phone you have owned for three days costs little. Apply the same caution you would to any download — our guide to checking whether a site is safe before paying is the relevant discipline.
While You Are Switching Phones
WhatsApp is one item on a longer list. Authenticator apps, UPI apps and offline downloads all need attention, and the order matters — our guide to moving to a new phone without losing data sets out the full sequence.
Set the old phone aside rather than selling it immediately. Keep it for a fortnight until you are certain nothing is missing. We publish practical switching guides for Indian users at Techleez com.
Trimming Before You Transfer
A WhatsApp library built over five years in India is mostly not conversation. It is forwarded videos, festival graphics, screenshots of screenshots, and the same photograph received in six groups. All of it will be copied across, slowly, and then occupy space on a phone you paid a premium for.
Spend fifteen minutes before you start. In WhatsApp, open Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage. It surfaces files larger than 5 MB and items forwarded many times, and it breaks usage down per chat. Clear the largest group chats first — the text stays, only the media goes.
Cutting a 40 GB library to 12 GB turns a transfer that might stall into one that finishes comfortably, and it removes the most common cause of running out of space on the new iPhone mid-import.
What to Expect on the iPhone Afterwards
A few differences will look like faults and are not.
Media that appeared instantly on Android may need to download again the first time you open an old chat — the messages arrive first and the files follow. Your notification tones will be iOS defaults rather than whatever you had configured. And WhatsApp on iOS backs up to iCloud, which shares your Apple storage quota, so if you are on the free 5 GB tier the first backup may fail until you either clear space or upgrade.
Check that backup runs successfully within the first day. A transfer that worked but a backup that never ran leaves you in exactly the position this article exists to prevent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone without resetting the iPhone?
Not officially. The transfer runs during the iPhone’s initial setup, so the device must be new or erased.
Will my Google Drive WhatsApp backup work on an iPhone?
No. Google Drive backups cannot be read by iOS, and iCloud backups cannot be read by Android.
What does not transfer?
Call history and your display name. Chats, media, profile photo and settings do transfer.
Can I transfer to a different phone number?
No. The same number must be used on both devices.
How long does it take?
It depends on your media library — anywhere from several minutes to well over an hour. Keep both phones plugged in and awake throughout.
Are paid WhatsApp transfer tools safe?
They pass your entire chat history through third-party software. The official route is free, and erasing a newly bought iPhone is a small cost by comparison.
