A warm phone is normal. A phone too hot to hold comfortably is not, and in India it is usually the environment rather than a fault. Ambient temperature is doing most of the work, and the phone is doing the rest.
Here is what actually causes it, what to do in the moment, and when heat is telling you something is genuinely wrong.
What Is Normal and What Is Not
Warm during fast charging, gaming, long video calls, GPS navigation or 4K recording is expected. Warm while sitting in your pocket doing nothing is not.
The rough test: uncomfortable to hold for more than a few seconds, or the screen dimming and the phone warning you it needs to cool down, means it is beyond its designed range. Persistent heat with no activity is the one worth investigating.
The Causes, in Order of How Often They Are the Answer
1. Ambient temperature and direct sun
Most phones are rated for operation up to around 35°C ambient. Across much of India for much of the year, that is a normal afternoon. Add direct sunlight on a dark phone body and the device is heating from outside before it does anything itself.
Common culprits: a phone mounted on a car dashboard in the sun with navigation running, which is close to a worst case; a phone left on a windowsill; and using a phone outdoors at full brightness in summer, where the display is both generating heat and being heated.
2. Charging while using
Fast charging generates heat by design. Gaming or video calling while charging generates heat from two sources at once, and the phone cannot dissipate both.
If you must use it while charging, use a slower charger. A phone charged at 18W runs considerably cooler than the same phone at 65W, and overnight the difference in finishing time does not matter.
3. Weak signal
The cause people never suspect. In poor coverage the modem raises transmit power continuously, which produces real heat with no visible activity. If your phone is warm in your pocket in one specific building, this is very likely why.

4. A misbehaving app
An app stuck in a loop or syncing endlessly will heat the phone from the processor. Check Settings → Battery → Battery usage for anything unexpectedly high, and force stop it. If it recurs, uninstall and reinstall, or leave it uninstalled.
Recently updated apps are the usual suspects, as are apps side-loaded from outside the Play Store — a good reason to be careful about installing APK files.
5. Thick cases and wireless charging
A heavy protective case traps heat the phone is trying to shed through its frame. Wireless charging is inherently less efficient than cable, and the difference becomes heat.
What to Do Right Now
- Stop what you are doing and close the heavy app.
- Unplug it if charging.
- Take the case off. The single most effective immediate step.
- Move it out of the sun into shade or an air-conditioned room.
- Turn brightness down and switch on airplane mode if you can spare the connectivity, which stops the modem entirely.
- Let it sit. Ten minutes untouched does more than anything else.
Do not put it in the fridge or freezer. Rapid cooling causes condensation inside the device, and water damage is permanent while overheating usually is not. Do not point a hairdryer on cool at it either, and do not run it under a tap.
Preventing It
Turn down brightness and switch to the standard refresh rate in hot weather. Avoid gaming while charging. Use a slower charger for overnight charging, and enable the charging optimisation setting most phones now offer.
For car navigation, mount the phone in shade rather than on the dashboard, keep the air-conditioning vent pointed towards it, and consider not charging while navigating in summer — the combination of GPS, screen, data and charging in direct sun is what produces the shutdown warning.

When Heat Means Something Is Actually Wrong
Most overheating is situational. A few signs are not:
- Any swelling. A back panel lifting, a screen bulging at an edge, or the phone rocking on a flat surface means the battery is swelling. Stop using it, stop charging it, and take it to a service centre. This is the one item here that is genuinely a safety issue.
- Heat while completely idle, with nothing in the battery usage list to explain it.
- Repeated thermal shutdowns during ordinary use.
- Heat concentrated at the charging port, which can indicate a damaged port or cable.
- Heat that began immediately after a screen or battery replacement, which often points to a poor-quality part.
