Recover a Google Account When You Cannot Use the Old Phone Number

Use Google’s official recovery options, a familiar device and available backup methods without relying on invented scores or guaranteed recovery claims.

You may be able to recover a Google Account without the old phone number, but success is not guaranteed. The options depend on the account, the information already registered and the verification Google offers. A blog cannot calculate your recovery “score” or promise a way around the checks.

Start with a device you still trust

If you remain signed in on a phone or computer, do not sign out or erase it just to start over. Use a familiar device, the browser you normally use and a location where you commonly sign in, such as home or work. Google recommends these in its recovery tips; it does not publish a ranking proving one signal always outweighs another.

  1. Open the official Google recovery page and enter the correct account address.
  2. Answer the questions shown. You may not receive every option described in another person’s guide.
  3. If the old number is unavailable, choose Try another way when offered.
  4. Use an available method you legitimately control, such as a signed-in device, recovery email or an offered backup verification method.
  5. Follow the result and any waiting instructions on screen. Keep the recovery contact address accessible.

If asked for a previous password, give the most recent one you remember accurately. Google says to answer as many questions as possible and make your best guess when unsure; wrong guesses do not automatically remove you from the process. Do not invent details or give passwords to a third-party helper.

Understand a security hold

A delay does not necessarily mean a human reviewer is checking your case. Google describes security holds that can last hours or days depending on risk factors. Follow the displayed instructions rather than a fixed “three business days” promise.

If another valid verification route becomes available—for example, a device where you normally sign in—Google says trying again through that route may help. There is no universal rule that any new attempt harms an unpublished score. Respect temporary limits shown on screen.

Know when another process applies

For a work, school or organisation-managed account, contact the administrator. Child accounts also have different recovery arrangements. Google’s recovery overview distinguishes these cases and warns that Google does not work with services claiming to provide account/password recovery.

Do not pay someone who promises a guaranteed unlock or give them remote control, backup codes or an OTP. Enter Google credentials only on the genuine Google sign-in page. A phone-number change is different from porting the same number to another operator: porting normally preserves the number.

If you suspect someone else has access

Use Google’s compromised-account process. Review security events and devices once accessible. Secure any other accounts whose passwords or recovery channels may be exposed; changing a password alone does not remove an email address as a recovery method. If financial details may have been misused, contact the relevant bank independently.

Prepare recovery after access is restored

  • Keep a recovery number and email that you control. Do not make every recovery path depend on the same lost device.
  • Review the recovery options available to your account. New recovery information may not become trusted immediately; Google documents up to seven days for some phone changes.
  • Where available, save backup codes securely outside the phone. They are single-use, and generating a new set invalidates the old one.
  • Set up supported additional sign-in methods and check that you know how to use them before an emergency.

Help a relative configure their own account only with their consent. Do not keep their private recovery codes as a convenient shared document. If Google cannot verify ownership, there may be no recoverable route; follow the official guidance for a replacement account and update other services carefully.
