India got 5G faster than almost anyone expected. What most people got with it was a new icon in the status bar, a speed test screenshot worth sharing once, and a vague sense that nothing much had changed.
That gap between the marketing and the daily experience is not a failure of the technology. It is a failure of the story told about it. 5G was sold on peak speed, which is the least useful thing it does.
What 5G actually improves, ranked by how much it affects you
- Capacity. The real headline. 5G carries far more simultaneous connections in the same space. This is why your phone works at a crowded railway station or a stadium where 4G used to collapse. Most people experience this as “it just worked” and never attribute it to 5G.
- Latency. Response time drops meaningfully, which matters for video calls, cloud gaming and anything interactive. This is where the technology is most noticeable in use.
- Upload speed. Often two to four times better than 4G on the same tower. If you back up photos, send video, or take video calls, this is the improvement you will actually feel.
- Download speed. The number in every advertisement, and the least relevant. A page loads or a video plays; beyond a point, faster is invisible.
If you were told 5G means fast downloads and nothing else, you were told the least interesting quarter of the story.
Non-standalone and standalone: the difference that explains a lot
Early 5G in India was largely non-standalone — a 5G radio layer sitting on top of a 4G core network. It delivers 5G speeds but keeps 4G latency and 4G control, because the brain of the network is still 4G.
Standalone 5G replaces the core as well. That is where the latency gains and the newer features actually come from. Indian operators took different paths on this, and it is a large part of why two people on different networks in the same city report very different experiences from the same technology.
You can often see which one you are on in the status bar: some phones show 5G and 5G+ or 5G UW style indicators, and some show nothing useful at all. Network settings on many Android phones will name it under network type.
Why your 5G is sometimes slower than 4G

The data problem nobody warned people about
This is the practical consequence of 5G that catches households out. Faster speeds mean apps default to higher quality, and higher quality consumes data far faster. Video that streamed at 480p on a weak 4G connection now streams at 1080p automatically. The same hour of viewing costs several times as much data.
Two settings changes, made once, remove most of the problem:
- In every video and social app, set mobile-data quality to Standard or Data Saver and keep high quality for Wi-Fi
- Turn off automatic photo and video backup on mobile data

Battery: the other side effect
5G radios draw more power, particularly at the edge of coverage where the phone is working hard to hold a weak signal. If your battery life dropped noticeably when 5G arrived, that is the cause rather than a coincidence.

Does 5G replace your broadband?
For some households, genuinely yes. Fixed wireless access — a 5G router at home instead of a cable — has become a real option in Indian cities, particularly where fibre is not available or the local provider is unreliable.
Where it works well: apartments with good outdoor 5G, households of two or three, moderate usage. Where it does not: heavy simultaneous streaming across many devices, work that depends on consistent upload, and areas where the 5G signal indoors is weak. Test the signal at the exact spot the router would sit before signing anything, and compare against a wired broadband speed test at peak hour.
Do you need a new phone?
Only if yours does not support the bands your operator uses. Two things to check rather than assuming:
- Whether your phone supports the specific 5G bands your operator has deployed in your city. A phone can be “5G” and still miss the band that matters locally
- Whether a software update is required. Several phones sold in India shipped with 5G disabled and enabled it later by update
