Every method of checking your EPF balance depends on one thing: an activated UAN with your KYC seeded. Without that, none of the shortcuts below work, and the missed call you keep making will keep going nowhere.
Assuming that is in place, here is every route that works, and one persistent worry that is almost always groundless.
Missed Call
The quickest method, and it needs no app and no internet.
Give a missed call to 9966044425 from the mobile number registered against your UAN. The call disconnects after two rings and you receive an SMS with your Member ID, your last contribution and your total balance.
It must be the registered number. Calling from any other phone returns nothing.
A note on something you may have read: several sites claimed during 2025 that the missed-call service had been discontinued. We could find no EPFO notice to that effect, and the service continues to be listed. If it does not respond for you, the likely cause is an unregistered number or incomplete KYC rather than withdrawal of the service.
SMS
Send EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number.
Replace ENG with your preferred language code: HIN for Hindi, PUN, GUJ, MAR, KAN, TEL, TAM, MAL or BEN. You receive your details in that language.
The Member Passbook Portal
The most detailed view, and the one to use when you need actual figures rather than a total.
Go to passbook.epfindia.gov.in and log in with your UAN, password and OTP. The passbook shows contributions month by month, split into employee share, employer share and pension contribution, with interest credited separately.
This is the view you need when checking whether your employer has actually deposited what your payslip says was deducted — which is the reason most people look in the first place.
UMANG App
The government’s unified services app. Open it and go to Services → Social Security → EPFO → View Passbook.
Useful if you already have UMANG for other services. If you do not, the portal does the same job without another installation.
DigiLocker
Your EPF passbook can be pulled into DigiLocker under Issued Documents → EPFO → Employee Provident Fund Passbook.
Worth doing once, because a document in DigiLocker’s issued section carries the same standing as the original — useful for loan applications and visa paperwork. Our DigiLocker guide explains why that distinction matters.
On WhatsApp
There is no national EPFO WhatsApp service for balance checks. Some regional offices operate WhatsApp numbers for grievances, which is a different thing. Sites advertising a WhatsApp balance-check number are, at best, pointing you at a regional grievance line.
Interest, and When It Appears
The interest rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25%, with crediting by 15 July 2026.
Interest is calculated monthly on the running balance but credited as a single annual entry, which is why your passbook can show a year of contributions with no interest line and then a large one all at once. That is normal.
The Blank Passbook Panic
The most common EPF worry, and almost always unfounded.
A passbook that shows nothing, or that stops partway through the year, is usually one of two things: your account is being migrated between offices and the ledger is temporarily unavailable, or your employer has not remitted for those months.
Neither means your money is gone. Migration resolves itself. Non-remittance is a real problem, but it is a problem with your employer, and the passbook is how you detect it.
If contributions are missing for several months, raise it with your employer in writing first, then file a grievance on the EPFO grievance portal. Do that promptly — recovering old unremitted contributions is much harder than catching a recent gap.
Things Worth Fixing Now
Check three things while you are logged in, because each one will block a withdrawal later:
- Your name, date of birth and gender must match your Aadhaar exactly. A middle name on one and not the other is enough to cause a rejection.
- Your bank account and IFSC must be seeded and verified.
- Your date of exit from any previous employer must be updated. Employers frequently forget, and the omission blocks claims.
Fixing these takes ten minutes now and saves weeks when you actually need the money — the full picture is in our guide to withdrawing PF online, which covers rules that changed substantially in 2026.

If You Have Worked at Several Companies
The UAN is meant to be permanent and to follow you across employers. In practice, plenty of people end up with more than one, usually because a new employer created a fresh UAN instead of linking the existing one.
Two UANs means your balance is split across accounts, and a withdrawal from one will not touch the other. Check by logging into the member portal and looking at the member IDs listed against your UAN — if a previous job is missing, its contributions are sitting somewhere you cannot see.
The fix is a transfer request, Form 13, filed online through the member portal. It moves the balance from the old member ID to your current one. Do it while you still remember the employer details and while the old employer still exists, because tracing a company that has since shut down is a slow, paper-heavy process.
Reading the Passbook Properly
The passbook splits every month into three columns, and they are not interchangeable.
Your employee share is what came out of your salary. The employer share is your employer’s contribution to your provident fund. The pension contribution goes to EPS, the pension scheme, and is a separate pot with separate rules — it is not simply added to your PF balance and it is not withdrawn the same way.
People are often surprised that their withdrawable balance is smaller than the headline total, and this is why. Understanding the three-way split before you plan around the money saves a disappointing afternoon.
