Every phone under ₹25,000 is now marketed as a gaming phone. The chipset gets a codename, the cooling gets a diagram, and the launch video shows a frame counter pinned at 60. Then you buy it, play for twenty-five minutes, and the frame counter is at 41 and the back of the phone is warm enough to notice.
Nothing in that story is a lie. It is just that the spec sheet describes the first two minutes of gameplay, and you care about the twentieth. Here is how to read a budget gaming phone honestly.
Peak performance is marketing. Sustained performance is the product.
A processor has a burst score and a settled score. Benchmarks measure the burst. Games measure the settled one, because after a few minutes the chip gets hot, the phone protects itself, and clock speeds come down. That drop is called thermal throttling, and on cheap phones it is the single biggest difference between the review and your experience.
What to look for instead of a benchmark number: any review or video that runs the same game for at least twenty minutes and shows a frame-time graph. Two phones with identical chipsets can behave completely differently here, because one has a vapour chamber and a metal mid-frame and the other has a sticker.
The display matters more than most buyers expect
Refresh rate is the headline, but three numbers underneath it decide how a game feels.

RAM: ignore the number on the box
Budget phones now advertise totals like “8GB + 8GB virtual RAM”. The second figure is storage being borrowed as slow memory. It helps keep background apps alive; it does nothing for frame rate. Judge the phone on physical RAM only. For most current mobile games, 6GB of real RAM is the floor and 8GB is comfortable.
Storage type is the quiet one. UFS storage loads levels visibly faster than the older eMMC still found at the very bottom of the market, and it does not appear in most marketing.
Battery and charging, in that order
Gaming is the most expensive thing you can ask a phone to do. A 5,000mAh cell is the practical minimum if you play for more than half an hour at a stretch. Fast charging is convenient but it is also a heat source, and charging while gaming is the fastest way to cook a battery — most phones now bypass the cell when they can, but many budget models do not.
If your current phone already dies too quickly, work through why a phone battery drains fast before assuming you need new hardware.
Heat: what to check in the shop
You cannot run a twenty-minute benchmark at a counter, but you can do this: open the camera, switch to 4K video, and record for five minutes. It stresses the chip in a similar way. Then feel the area just above the logo on the back. Warm is normal. Uncomfortable in five minutes means unpleasant in fifteen.
Also ask what the cooling actually is. “Multi-layer graphite” is a sheet. A vapour chamber is a sealed liquid system and genuinely helps. The difference in sustained frame rate between the two can be double digits.
Software decides how long the phone stays good
Two identical phones diverge after a year based on software. Check three things before buying:
- Update commitment. How many Android versions and how many years of security patches? Brands publish this now, and it varies wildly at the same price.
- Preinstalled apps. Some budget lines ship with lock-screen ad delivery and a pile of removable apps. Look for reviews that mention this specifically; it is not on the spec sheet.
- A real game mode. The useful ones block calls and notifications, lock the CPU governor, and stop background sync. The decorative ones just show a floating panel.

Buying used or refurbished
A two-year-old upper mid-range phone often beats a new budget phone at the same price, because it was built with better thermals. The risk moves from performance to provenance. Always check the IMEI before buying a used phone, and test charging, all cameras and both SIM slots before money changes hands. Battery health is the other unknown — ask how many charge cycles the phone has done, and treat a seller who cannot answer as a seller to walk away from.

- Physical RAM, not virtual RAM, at 6GB or more
- UFS storage rather than eMMC
- Touch sampling rate stated, and above 240Hz if you play shooters
- 5,000mAh or larger battery
- A named cooling system, ideally a vapour chamber
- A published update policy in years, not adjectives
- A five-minute 4K video recording test done in front of you

Sometimes, because those models spend their budget on thermals and touch response rather than cameras. If you play daily, that is the right trade. If you play occasionally, a well-cooled general-purpose phone is better value.
Do I need 120Hz?
For gaming specifically, less than you think — many popular titles are capped lower on budget hardware anyway. High touch sampling matters more than high refresh.

Not always. Full storage and cache buildup cause the same symptom. Try clearing out full storage and clearing app cache first, and see overheating fixes if it also runs hot.
