Instant e-PAN: Eligibility, DigiLocker Proof and the Official Free Route

Check Instant e-PAN eligibility, prepare DigiLocker date-of-birth proof, apply through the Income Tax portal and track the request without a timing promise.

The Income Tax Department’s Instant e-PAN service provides an eligible individual with a digitally signed electronic PAN without a service fee. It is a specific application route, not a promise that every PAN-related task is free or can be completed immediately.

Check eligibility before starting

The current official FAQ requires a valid Aadhaar, access to its linked mobile number and access to DigiLocker. You must not already have a PAN, must not be a minor on the request date and must not fall within the specified representative-assessee category. If you already have a PAN but lost the card or PDF, use recovery or reprint support for that PAN instead of applying for another number.

The newer step: date-of-birth proof from DigiLocker

The current process retrieves supporting date-of-birth information from DigiLocker with your consent. Eligible document types include a birth certificate, driving licence, specified Class X or matriculation records and a Central Government Health Scheme card. Check the exact list in the official FAQ and ensure the appropriate record is already fetched from its issuer into DigiLocker.

A personal scan uploaded to cloud storage is not automatically the issuer-provided record this flow needs. Open the record first and compare its date of birth and identity details with Aadhaar. Resolve a substantive mismatch rather than submitting conflicting information and hoping it passes.

Follow the current portal flow

  1. Open incometax.gov.in directly. Select Instant e-PAN and the new-application option.
  2. Read the eligibility declarations and consent. Continue only if they are accurate for you.
  3. Follow the official DigiLocker redirection, review the requested document sharing and complete its authentication.
  4. Complete Aadhaar validation, check the displayed details and supply the information required by the form.
  5. Save the acknowledgement after successful submission.

The current user manual illustrates this sequence. Follow the live screen’s OTP timer. Do not reuse a code after requesting a new one or share it with someone offering to speed up approval.

Submission, allotment and download are different

An acknowledgement confirms that a request was submitted; it does not itself prove that a PAN has been allotted. Use Instant e-PAN’s Check Status / Download e-PAN option. Once the status confirms generation and allotment, the portal provides the available viewing and download actions. Account registration on the e-filing portal is a separate step.

Do not arrange a time-critical appointment around an unverified ten-minute promise. If a request remains unresolved, retain the acknowledgement and use the department’s official support. Do not submit repeated new applications while the first request is pending.

Do not confuse different PAN services

Regular PAN applications, corrections and physical-card reprints can use authorised service providers and may carry charges. A charge alone does not prove fraud. Conversely, paying a stranger does not create eligibility for Instant e-PAN. Start with the department’s links to identify the proper service.

Older instructions describe additional Aadhaar-based PAN update options. Do not assume that every older option remains available in the newer Instant e-PAN flow. For an existing PAN correction, follow the current correction route identified by the department.

Keep the result secure

Save the downloaded document in a protected location, check the allotted number and details, and keep access to the account and recovery number. Share it only for a clear purpose. A PAN is an identifier; it does not establish that a person calling with that number is from the tax department.

Reviewed on 27 October 2026. Updated for the department’s DigiLocker-based workflow. No allotment time or approval outcome is guaranteed.
