Gemini is Google’s AI assistant for tasks such as drafting, explaining and working with supplied material. Start with a small, non-sensitive task and inspect the result before relying on it. Features differ by account, country, language, device and plan.
Check which access applies to you
Some Gemini web features can be used without signing in. Additional features and saved activity require an eligible Google Account. Work and school access depends on the organisation’s edition and administrator settings; it is not guaranteed simply because you have a Gmail address. Google lists the current conditions in its sign-in requirements.
Open the official Gemini website or follow Google’s link to the app for your device. Check the developer before installing an app with a similar name. If an option is unavailable, read the eligibility information instead of changing account details to bypass a restriction.
Choose the data settings before uploading
Review Keep Activity and the Gemini Privacy Hub. Turning Keep Activity off does not mean immediate deletion or zero processing: Google retains those chats for up to 72 hours, and feedback can have separate uses. Previously reviewed chats have different retention rules. Do not enter confidential information without authorisation.
Check connected apps separately. A writing exercise does not require access to your email, files or calendar. Read the permission request and grant only the access needed for an intended task.
Run a first task with a known answer
- Choose a short public passage or a note you wrote yourself.
- Ask for a summary in your preferred language and specify the length.
- Tell Gemini to preserve names, dates and exceptions and identify missing information.
- Compare each summary point with the original.
- Ask for a correction to a specific error, then check the revised version again.
For example, ask it to turn a workshop notice into a checklist of what to bring and when to arrive. If the notice does not state a fee, the summary should not supply one. This is a more useful beginner test than asking a broad question whose answer you cannot assess.
Images and language need extra review
When using an image, avoid uploading identity records or private details unnecessarily. Check extracted text character by character when a number matters. Do not use a plant identification or a generated medical interpretation as a safety decision.
Test the actual language, accent and terminology you need. Availability of a language is not a guarantee of correct translation or pronunciation. Ask a fluent reader to review material that will be published or used for an important decision.
Distinguish the app from integrations
Gemini features inside Docs, Gmail or other products can require an eligible plan or account setting. Google’s Workspace guidance explains that eligibility. A phone’s assistant shortcut also varies; do not assume every Android phone has the same power-button action.
Check current usage limits before paying. Save useful output in a format you control and verify factual claims at their original source. The result is a draft to review, even when it appears inside an app you already trust.
